THE CHAIN / NOBODY DID IT, AND IT WAS DONE
The inversion at scale is not performed by one person. It is divided, and the division is the point.
One person writes the definition. Another compiles the list. Another schedules the transport. Another signs the requisition. Another guards the door. Each task is small, technical, and defensible in isolation, and the person performing it can truthfully say they did not do the thing that was done.
The Nuremberg proceedings addressed this directly. What became Nuremberg Principle IV holds that acting on superior orders does not relieve responsibility, provided a moral choice was in fact possible. The principle exists because the defence was made, repeatedly, and because it was structurally plausible.
Stanley Milgram's obedience experiments, first published in 1963, reported that a majority of ordinary participants continued to the maximum shock level when instructed by an authority in a laboratory setting. The work is contested: later examination of the archive, notably by Gina Perry, documented variation in procedure and pressure across conditions that the headline figure obscures. The Archive cites it as a demonstration that the effect is real and easy to obtain, not as a measurement of a constant.
The Stanford prison study of 1971 is frequently cited alongside it. The Archive does not cite it as evidence. Subsequent examination of the recordings and papers, including work by Thibault Le Texier, established that participants were coached and the conditions directed. It belongs in this collection only as an instance of a different face: a finding that persisted for decades because it was useful.
WHAT THE CHAIN DOES. It converts a decision into a procedure. A decision has an author who can be asked why. A procedure has operators, who can only be asked whether they followed it — and they did.
It also distributes the moral weight until each portion is bearable. Nobody carries an unbearable amount. The unbearable amount is nevertheless carried, by the structure, which does not experience it.
THE RELATION TO O. Unity is knowable through relationship: the many participate in one whole. The chain is the counterfeit — many parts participating in one act while each denies participation in the whole of it. The connection is retained and the responsibility is not. This is why the collection treats administration as a face of the inversion and not as its neutral setting.
