THE VOCABULARY / EUPHEMISM AS INFRASTRUCTURE
Every documented case in this collection generated its own vocabulary, and the vocabulary was not decorative. It was equipment.
A term that can be spoken in a meeting, written in a memorandum and entered in a ledger is a term the work can be organised around. Plain description cannot be organised around, because plain description makes the participants hear what they are doing at the moment they arrange it.
STANDARD — George Orwell, "Politics and the English Language," 1946: "Such phraseology is needed if one wants to name things without calling up mental pictures of them." He gives the examples of his period: pacification, transfer of population, elimination of unreliable elements.
Victor Klemperer, a philologist who survived in Dresden, kept a record of the language of the Third Reich through the whole period and published it in 1947 as LTI — Lingua Tertii Imperii. His finding was that the regime's most durable instrument was not the speech or the rally but the alteration of ordinary vocabulary, absorbed by people who did not consider themselves persuaded of anything.
The pattern recurs with each administration's own terms, and each generation finds the previous generation's euphemisms obvious and its own transparent. That asymmetry is the reliable part.
THE MECHANISM. The euphemism does three things. It permits the sentence to be completed in company. It removes the object of the act from the sentence, so that the grammar itself has no victim in it. And it certifies membership: fluency in the term marks the speaker as someone who understands what is really meant, which is a form of belonging that is expensive to give up.
THE TEST. Ask what the plain sentence would be, with a person as its object, in the active voice. If the plain sentence cannot be said in the room where the work is arranged, the vocabulary is load-bearing and the room is doing something it has agreed not to hear.
THE GUARD. This is not a claim that careful or technical language is inherently suspect. Precision, clinical distance and legal formality all have honest uses, and demanding plain emotional speech in every setting has its own failure modes. The specific marker is a term that removes the person from the sentence while the work is being arranged, and that would not survive translation back.
