THE HOUSEHOLD / THE INVERSION AT DOMESTIC SCALE
This collection studies states, institutions and centuries because they leave records. The same structure operates between two people, and it operates by the same means.
Evan Stark's 2007 account of coercive control described a pattern that is not primarily a sequence of assaults but a regime: isolation from friends, family and independent income; surveillance of movement, message and expenditure; the regulation of ordinary daily conduct through rules whose content matters less than the fact of their being set; and the gradual establishment of one person as the authority through which the other's world is mediated.
England and Wales made controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship a criminal offence under section 76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015. The legal recognition matters to this record because it marks the point at which the harm was accepted as consisting in the structure itself rather than only in discrete violent acts.
THE CORRESPONDENCE IS EXACT. Isolation is the taxonomy: the person is separated from the whole, and the separation is maintained administratively rather than by force. Monitoring is the ledger. The rules that change without notice are drift, and their instability is what makes the reference point unrecoverable. The euphemism is present too — jealousy described as care, control described as protection, the vocabulary that permits the arrangement to be discussed without being heard.
And the banner appears here in its most concentrated form: nearly all of it is administered as being for the other person's good.
WHY THE SMALL SCALE IS NOT THE SIMPLE ONE. At the scale of a state, the structure is visible in documents and can be read after the fact by anyone. In a household there is no archive, no external auditor and frequently no second witness, and the person best placed to describe the structure is the person whose perception it was designed to make unreliable. The absence of a record is not evidence that the structure was absent; the production of that absence is one of its features.
THE RELATION TO THIS COLLECTION. The Nearest Instance record observes that the inversion does not require a monster, an ideology or a cause. This record states the corollary: it does not require scale either. Nothing in the pattern needs a nation. It needs only a whole, a part placed outside it, and enough time.
