THE COUNTERFEIT UNITY / THE SCAPEGOAT
There is a reliable way to produce the feeling of unity without the fact of it. Identify a common object of exclusion, and the group will cohere around the exclusion.
The cohesion is not imaginary. It is immediate, powerful, and it delivers what unity delivers: belonging, clarity, the dissolution of internal conflict, a shared moral direction. This is why it works and why it recurs.
René Girard proposed that this mechanism underlies the founding of communities and their sacrificial rites: internal rivalry is discharged onto a single victim, whose expulsion restores peace, and whose guilt is believed sincerely by everyone who benefits from it. The Archive marks this as interpretation. It is a theory of wide reach and it is contested; it is cited here for its description of the mechanism, not as an established account of religion.
The mechanism is legible in the documented cases without needing the theory. The European witch trials, the pogrom, the moral panic and the show trial share a shape: a community under strain, a victim whose guilt resolves the strain, and a period afterward in which the guilt seems obvious to almost everyone present and absurd to almost everyone later.
WHY THIS IS THE SHARPEST FACE. Every other face in this collection is a denial of unity. This one is an imitation of it. It produces the phenomenology of the whole — the sense of being joined to something larger, of the boundaries between people softening — and it produces it by placing someone outside.
THE TEST, AND IT IS AWKWARD. The counterfeit is not distinguished by the intensity of the feeling, because the feeling is genuine. It is distinguished by its requirement. Ask what the unity would lose if the excluded party were readmitted tomorrow. Real unity would lose nothing and would gain a member. Counterfeit unity would lose its organising principle, and the group would have to find another object or dissolve.
THE GUARD. Not every exclusion is scapegoating. Communities exclude for reasons that survive scrutiny, and treating all exclusion as sacrificial makes accountability impossible — which is itself a route to harm. The marker is that the guilt is required to be total, that evidence for it is unfalsifiable, and that the group's cohesion visibly depends on it being maintained.
