THE CLEAN / CONTAMINATION LOGIC
The taxonomy record describes how a group is placed outside the whole. It does not explain why the placement produces urgency. Purity does.
Mary Douglas argued in Purity and Danger, 1966, that dirt is not an objective property but "matter out of place" — that pollution beliefs encode a society's classification system, and that what threatens the categories is experienced as contaminating. The Archive marks this as interpretation; it is a standard and widely used framework rather than a settled finding.
The operational consequence is documented across the cases. Once a group is described in the language of contamination — vermin, infestation, disease, cancer, filth, cleansing — three things follow without further argument.
The response required becomes removal rather than negotiation. One does not negotiate with an infestation.
Urgency becomes self-justifying. Contamination spreads, so delay is itself dangerous, and deliberation becomes complicity.
Disgust replaces judgement. Disgust is fast, bodily, resistant to counter-evidence, and does not present itself as an opinion that could be mistaken. It arrives already certain.
THE RELATION TO O. The framework holds that unity does not erase difference and that the boundary between self and other is permeable. Contamination logic is the exact inverse: the boundary is absolute, permeability is the threat, and the good is defined as the successful exclusion of what is outside. Where unity says the wave is not separate from the sea, purity says the sea must be defended from the wave.
THE TEST. Attend to the noun. A political disagreement describes people who are wrong. Contamination logic describes people who are unclean, and the shift is usually visible in public language months or years before anything else changes. It is the earliest reliable signal in the sequence this collection documents, and the cheapest to notice.
THE GUARD. Ordinary hygiene language, medical language and metaphor are not evidence of anything. The specific marker is contamination language applied to persons as a class, in a context where an action against them is being contemplated.
